What are ecosystem goods and services?

In this presentation, students use fictional advertisements to discover the distinctions between 'goods' and 'services,' and test their understanding of the concepts with a number of examples and non-examples. They examine images of ecosystems to identify examples and categories of ecosystem goods and services (EGS). Finally students consider the impact of human activity on EGS. This lesson is part of the Statistics Canada: Human Activity and the Environment Teacher’s Kit that explores the question, “What is the value of an ecosystem?” It may be used independently or in combination with other teaching and learning activities in the kit. The zipped folder contains a PDF lesson and a PPT slide set.
