Students learn about the concept of significance and how it can be used to learn more about local histories. Students use criteria for significance to help explain the importance of person, event, place, or idea. In addition, students learn how to use criteria to explain who should know about an important person, event, place, or idea. Designed to support inquiry into local histories, this tutorial includes instructional suggestions for teachers (introducing the strategy, practicing the strategy, applying the strategy to learn more about a local history, and assessing use of the strategy) and resources for students (activity sheets, and self-assessment rubric).
