Critically reading a source

Students learn to identify the intended and unintended purposes and messages of text and other sources when inquiring into local history. They learn to use a strategy to question or interrogate text and other sources to determine the perspective and purpose, and to reveal inequities or social justice issues. Designed to support inquiry into local histories, this tutorial includes instructional suggestions for teachers (introducing the strategy, practicing the strategy, reinforcing the strategy, applying the strategy to learn more about a local history, and assessing use of the strategy) and resources for students (student guide, source material, and self-assessment rubric).
