Assessing historical commemorations

Students learn a strategy to judge the appropriateness of historical commemorations. Students explore why perspectives on commemorations of historical events and people can change over time. Students use criteria to assess the appropriateness of historical commemorations. Designed to support inquiry into local histories, this tutorial includes instructional suggestions for teachers (introducing the strategy, practicing the strategy, applying the strategy to learn more about a local history, and assessing use of the strategy) and resources for students (activity sheet, source materials, and self-assessment rubric).
