What's included

The downloadable lessons in the Tools for Thought (T4T) online collection contain teacher materials and student resources in various formats.

Teaching materials

PDF lesson plans

These documents describe key features of the lesson including a description of the goals, outcomes and suggested instructional sequence. Lessons come in two versions with different levels of explicit instruction:

Brief lessons

Depending on student familiarity with a selected tool, it may be sufficient to briefly review the instructions for the tool and then direct students to the activity sheets related to the assigned topic for that day’s lesson.

Fully developed lessons

If students are not familiar with the tool, it may be useful to work through some or all of the tool development activities and supplements found in a complete lesson plan.

Supplemental lesson material

Interactive whiteboard presentations

Many of the lessons are supported by an interactive whiteboard supplement made available through Promethean and Smartboard software. These ready-to-use presentations take students through each stage of the lesson and facilitate a debriefing of each activity.

PowerPoint presentations

Some of the lesson plans are supported with a PowerPoint supplement. These ready-to-use presentations take students through each stage of the lesson, introduce the activities and facilitate debriefing of each activity.

Video clips

Some lessons include videos to enhance and complement instruction.

Student materials

Activity sheets

Reproducible student activity sheets provide a range of materials to support student learning. Activity sheets come in the form of data charts, activities and assessment materials.

Student guides/resources

Each lesson contains a supplement to assist students in developing self-regulated use of the tool. The guide summarizes key ideas for students to refer back to after the tools have been introduced. With some lessons, self-assessment rubrics and sample answers are included.
