This revised resource is a collection of 21 detailed lesson plans for infusing critical thinking into middle school and high school English. The teaching activities span many genres including novels, short stories, poems, plays, essays, songs and fairy tales.

Exemplars in geographical thinking

This resource contains eight critical challenges to engage students in thinking geographically about a wide range of regional, national and global issues. The lessons are designed to introduce six core concepts in geographical thinking: spatial significance, evidence and interpretation, patterns and trends, interrelationships, geographical perspective, and ethical judgment.

Cette ressource présente un ensemble de huit défis d’analyse critique pour encourager les élèves à penser de façon critique en géographie en s’appuyant sur un large éventail de sujets et d’enjeux régionaux, nationaux et mondiaux. Chaque leçon illustre l’un des six concepts interdépendants essentiels à la pensée géographique : importance spatiale, appel aux sources et interprétation, constantes et tendances, interrelations, perspective géographique et jugement sur le plan géographique.

Exemplars in Historical Thinking
20th Century Canada

This resource presents a collection of nine critical challenges to engage students in thinking historically about a wide range of events and people in 20th century Canada. The critical challenges build on a conception of historical thinking articulated by Peter Seixas of the University of British Columbia. The resource models how teachers and students can use these ideas to raise critical questions and to think more deeply about history. The challenges are built around various featured topics in 20th century Canadian history, but teachers can adapt the lessons to engage students in thinking about a wide range of historical events and people.

Les défis d’analyse critique dans cette collection sont issus du concept de la pensée historique de Peter Seixas de l’université de la Colombie-Britannique. Ce concept développé en détail dans la publication de TC² intitulée « Enseigner la pensée historique » est axé sur six concepts : importance historique, cause et consequence, continuité et changement, appel aux sources et interpretation, perspective historique et jugement éthique.

Cette ressource sert de modèle aux enseignantes, aux enseignants et aux élèves pour utiliser ces six concepts permettant de poser des questions critiques et de réfléchir davantage à l’histoire. Les défis sont articulés autour de l’histoire du Canada au XXe siècle, mais le personnel enseignant peut adapter les leçons pour faire réfléchir les élèves à un large éventail d’événements et de personnages historiques.

Immigration in 20th Century Canada

The eight challenges in this unit explore the historical and contemporary treatment of immigrant groups. After researching positive immigration stories in their own family histories, students analyze the uneven reception of immigrant groups from the early Europeans to present-day "economic" refugees. In studying current immigration policies, students review hypothetical applicants to determine who to accept as landed immigrants, critique the current points system, establish an immigration quota and send a letter to the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration.

Snapshots of 19th Century Canada

This unit of eight challenges examines the social, political and economic conditions throughout the 19th century from four groups’ perspectives – English Canadians, French Canadians, recent immigrants and Aboriginal peoples. Among the activities, students prepare a report card on the implications of nine selected events from each group’s perspective; create a giant annotated timeline; write an "authentic" diary/journal entry about an assigned event; and prepare a one-page definitive assessment of the 19th century from the four perspectives.

Active Citizenship: Student Action Projects

This TC² print resource provides a framework for elementary and secondary teachers to guide students in planning and implementing a social action project. Students learn to clarify the problem, agree on a solution, plan a course of action and implement and evaluate the action.

Caring for Young People’s Rights

The seven challenges in this resource foster understanding of the nature and range of basic human rights and appreciation of the importance of protecting these rights. Human rights are personalized through real-life profiles of young people in a variety of developing countries. Students then translate the shortfalls in these young people's daily lives into statements about the rights to which everyone is entitled in order to enjoy a minimum quality of life. Students assume the role of development director in planning a project to secure the rights of the young people they have been reading about.

Globalizing Connections: Canada and the Developing World

This resource presents a framework for analyzing the historical roots, contemporary challenges and Canadian responses to globalization in eight areas of human interaction. This resource includes detailed teaching activities to introduce the idea of globalization and to help students analyze the global dynamics of various economic, political, environmental and social phenomena. In addition to teacher instructions, student activity sheets and assessments rubrics, the print resource offers detailed briefing sheets on the historical and contemporary developments of five phenomena: catastrophic diseases, water use, food supply, human migration and communication. Three other phenomena are addressed in the online supplement.
